US President Donald Trump recently spoke of his dwindling faith in the workings of the European Commission under the EU after they fined Elon Musk’s social media platform X for a sum of €120 million. As per the information in their official website, the EU Commission has observed that the social media platform has violated the Digital Services Act.
Although this prompted a shocking counter from the X senior officials who decided to block the EU Commission’s advert account on X, President Trump’s response has piqued interest among netizens regarding the reported pivotal role of the US in matters involving international affairs. However, some users on social media choose to look through the EU lens instead.
President Trump criticizes EU Commission for fining Elon Musk’s X
On December 8, US President Donald Trump led a White House roundtable, during which a reporter asked him about his views on the recent fine of worth €120 million by the EU Commission against Elon Musk’s X. In response, the President described the decision by them as “nasty,” with him not believing that this is the right course of action.

President Trump further reiterated that the authorities and institutions spanning across Europe should remember manifesting the ideas and virtues that the European Union stands for. In this context, the President said, “Europe is going in some bad directions,” adding, “We don’t want Europe to change so much.”
Reiterating this point, he further specified that CEO of X, Elon Musk, has reportedly contacted him regarding the fine sanctioned by the European Commission. President Trump stated, “Elon has not called me to ask for help in that one.” He further stated that he is expecting a report on the same to decide the necessary course of action to remedy the situation.

Social media is divided over President Trump’s EU criticism
President Trump’s response to the European Commission’s fine of €120 million on Elon Musk’s networking platform X has gone viral on social media. On X, user @WatcherGuru took to the website to share a snippet of the roundtable meeting at the White House.
In the comment section of the post, viewers expressed their utmost support to President Trump with regard to the EU’s reported tussles with U.S. companies over matters involving data privacy and content moderation.

Another group of commenters, however, chose to defend the steps taken by the European Commission against Elon Musk’s X. They briefly threw light on the questionable responses made by the Republican government, such as expressing displeasure over the fine due to X’s violation of the Digital Services Act as per the Commission’s press release dated December 5.
