Tesla CEO Elon Musk Makes Brutally Honest Claim About Solar Electricity

Elon Musk recently provided important insight on the magnitude of the Sun’s energy in the solar system. During his appearance on “The All In Podcast,” the Tesla CEO discussed at length about the Sun being the source of cent per cent energy in the solar system. Citing references from scientific research, Musk put forward an intriguing fact on one of the most prominent renewable sources of energy for the world to tap in.

Time and again, Elon Musk has expressed his interest in harnessing solar energy and developing solutions for a clean and inexhaustible source for power and electricity. He has often made this evident through multiple posts on social media, particularly on X.

On Friday, the chief executive shared a graphical representation of electricity generation through different modes. This reignited conversations on sustainability and scientific progress for clean energy.

Elon Musk provides scientific insight on the Sun’s energy

During the October 31 episode of “The All In Podcast” with hosts Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, David Sacks & David Friedberg, Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke at length on the inexhaustible nature of solar electricity. In the last segment of the podcast, the hosts began discussing Bill Gates’s recent take on climate change.

On October 28, the Microsoft founder wrote on his Gates Notes website that climate change is not as serious a threat to life as current global crises such as human welfare. In response, Musk critiqued Gates’s viewpoint, stating that the immediacy of climate change should indeed be a concern. In this context, the chief executive highlighted the need to switch to sustainable energy sources such as solar electricity.

In the podcast episode, Musk elaborated on the positive attributes of opting for solar energy as the alternative to fuels. As per the hosts, the infrastructure required to harness solar energy is cheaper compared to carbon based sources. Following this line of thought, the Tesla CEO later talked about the limitlessness of the sun’s energy, even if planetary destruction were to occur across the solar system.

Musk said, “The sun is about 99.8% of the mass of the solar system. Jupiter’s about 0.1% and everything else is in the remaining 0.1%, and we are much less than 0.1%. So, if you burnt all of the mass of the solar system, then the total energy produced by the sun would still round up to 100%.

Could Solar Energy be Elon Musk’s next big project?

Harnessing power from the sun has been one of Elon Musk’s ambitious projects, besides developing innovations in AI technology, space travel, and EV automobiles. This was evident in Tesla’s acquisition of SolarCity. Owned by his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive, Musk acquired the company in 2016 for $2.6 billion in an attempt to coalesce solar energy generation, battery storage and Tesla’s line of electric vehicles.

Additionally, Elon Musk has taken to X on several occasions to speak about the inevitability for the world to switch to solar energy sooner of later. In a 2024 X post, he highlighted the indispensability of the Kardashev Scale to understand the necessity to harness energy from the galaxy to sustain life. He reiterated this point in the podcast episode as well.

In another X post dated November 14, Musk reposted Jesse Peltan’s X post on China’s developing solar energy at a greater rate. The Tesla CEO’s claims in his social media rants and his recent podcast appearance is yet another reminder of the urgency created by climate change for the world to reconsider its options for the sake of sustainability.
