The news of an acquitted arson attacker setting a a woman on fire has been making the rounds on social media. On most platforms, the judge is being blamed for the incident. As the news continues to be discussed on online circles, views on the judge’s lack of foresight recur through the conversation threads.
There has been significant uproar after Cook County judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez freed Lawrence Reed on August this year, despite caution pertaining to his reputation as a threat to public welfare. As per the Daily Mail report reposted by Musk in his latest X post, “Reed was accused of dousing Chicago resident Bethany Magee, 26, in gasoline and setting her alight on a train on November 17.” Since then, netizens have harshly criticized the judge’s lack of accountability with respect to this incident.

On November 25, Elon Musk took to X to comment on the recent Chicago arson incident. Reposting Daily Mail’s news report, Musk wrote, “There must be accountability for judges.” This was a critique of the recent arson incident in Chicago, where a recently acquitted criminal set a civilian woman on fire while on a train.

In the past, Musk has been open about his condemnation of judges for their eligibility criteria as well as lack of accountability. During one of his previous appearances on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Elon Musk had highlighted the fact that there is no need for law degrees and legal experience to be considered for the position of judge in the court of law.
Also, on November 24, the Tesla chief executive posted another remark on X regarding the position of judges. He wrote, “It is incredibly cruel of so many judges to push murderous thugs on the innocent public!“

Netizens took to the comments in the Tesla chief executive’s take on the absence of judicial oversight in matters of public welfare. In the aftermath of the recent Chicago arson case, Elon Musk posted on X to question the lack of accountability of judges in courts. Most of the users in the comment section agreed with Musk. They also went on to criticize Molina-Gonzalez, holding her responsible for the crime.
When the system fails to protect the innocent, the weight of its mistakes is carried by the victims justice should never grant freedom to those who turn it into tragedy.

Although many shared Musk’s sentiments, some wondered about the effectiveness of social media criticism of real world issues that require proper measure. A user commented on the absence of a “roadmap” to make sure judges are held accountable for the verdicts passed that do affect the lives of civilians on a daily basis.
