Since its inception in 1984 under the leadership of Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic has been one of the major airlines to operate from Britain. With its hub situated in London Heathrow Airport, the services of the airlines span to locations in North America, the Caribbean Islands, Africa, as well as parts of Asia. Currently, the parent companies of the brand are Virgin Group, occupying 51 per cent of the stake, and Delta Air Lines, in possession of the remaining 49 per cent.
Branson was the first CEO of the airlines, leading Virgin Atlantic for nearly two decades from 1984 to 2001. The founding figure was succeeded by Steve Ridgway from 2001 to 2013. After him, Shai Weiss took the reins of Virgin Atlantic from 2013 onwards. He dedicated the next seven years to build one of the biggest names in the British airlines industry.
Virgin Atlantic under Shai Weiss’ Leadership
Shai Weiss stepped into the shoes of the CEO of Virgin Atlantic in 2013. One of the airlines’s biggest virtue has been its resilient nature against two factors in particular – the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ever-rising fuel costs.
Under Weiss’ leadership as chief executive, Virgin Atlantic accomplished a major feat of overcoming the adversities brought forth by the travel restrictions during the pandemic era. At the same time, Weiss steered the company through the financial challenges that emerged due to the price hike in air fuel.

Another major milestone in Weiss’s record as CEO of the British airlines was the partnership with various brands to boost the company’s growth further. Their collaboration with Delta strengthened the brand’s trans-Atlantic joint venture. This was accompanied by the incredible boost in customer satisfaction and engagement, which had a positive impact on the company’s reputation as one of the most reputed workplaces across the globe.
Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss continues to inspire Airlines industry
On October 13, Virgin Atlantic announced that Corneel Koster will be stepping into the shoes of the chief executive in January 2026. As Shai Weiss’ tenure as CEO of the airlines comes to an end next month, his departure will mark an important chapter in the company’s history.
Weiss’ contribution to Virgin Atlantic’s success is not merely limited to the financial dimension. Indeed, under his supervision, the company became immensely profitable. This was evident in the company’s £20 million pre-tax profit in 2024.

Besides the financial accomplishments, perhaps the most pivotal endeavor Weiss took up was the restructuring of the company. Virgin Atlantic underwent a near-complete overhaul which helped boosted the company’s efficiency to a great extent.
Along with refinancing deals and cost-effective ways to sustain the airlines in the long term, the chief executive was undoubtedly a key factor that propelled Virgin Atlantic to a crucial position. This has also helped them build a strong foundation for the airlines to dominate the respective industry as a whole.
Thus, with his calm demeanor and strategic outlook. Shai Weiss has etched an important chapter in the legacy of Virgin Atlantic as well as in the annals of the airlines industry.
