After €120 Million Fine, Elon Musk’s X Blocks EU Commission From Making Ads

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been making headlines since X’s tussle with the European Commission over the misleading nature of blue tick badges assigned to users on the social media platform. On December 5, the EU Commission fined X €120 million under the Digital Services Act, as per their press release. This prompted the social media platform to take a harsher step immediately after.

On December 7, Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, took to the social media platform to call out the European Commission’s apparent ironical manner of investigating the issues for which the fine has been penalized upon the company. On the same X post, Bier announced that the ad account of the European Commission has been blocked, creating ripples across social media since.

Elon Musk’s X makes a bold move of banning EU Commission’s ad account

Nikita Bier, a senior adviser at X, recently made waves on social media for a shocking move by banning the European Commission’s ad account after X was fined €120 million. The fine was penalized as per the Digital Services Act as enshrined by the European Commission.

On December 5, the organization stated in their press release that the social media platform has breached the regulations under the Act. This includes “deceptive design of its ‘blue checkmark’, the lack of transparency of its advertising repository, and the failure to provide access to public data for researchers.

However, Bier’s reaction to the fine was unanticipated. On his X post, the Head of Product at X called out the Commission for their reported illicit behavior when it came to investigating the platform’s processes and workflows. Bier wrote, “You logged into your dormant ad account to take advantage of an exploit in our Ad Composer — to post a link that deceives users into thinking it’s a video and to artificially increase its reach.” The Product Head further added that this was an infringement of the freedom of expression that the platform upholds.

With this, Bier announced that the advertisement account of the European Commission has been officially banned. Prior to this instance, Musk has had his share of crises with the EU looming large. When it came to providing clarity regarding content moderation and data privacy in the past, X has not been able to satisfy the Commission’s concerns regarding these points of late. However, this has not stopped Musk from attacking the EU on social media in a very straightforward manner.

Elon Musk continues to resist EU Commission on social media

The X chief executive has been very vocal about how the European Commission, in his opinion, hinders the progress and development of the social media platform. Given his active presence of X, Elon Musk makes it a point to post regularly on his profile, ranging from political opinion, business ideas, and providing glimpses of the progress made at his companies. This list also includes his occasional X posts that criticizes the European Union.

Reposting The Wall Street Journal‘s editorial tidbit on how the fining of Elon Musk’s X leads to “economic self-sabotage and diplomatic harm in one stroke.”

A few hours later on the same day the previous post went up on X, Musk’s next post was a brief “lol”, followed by a report of X user @Polymarket’s latest update then, “X is now the #1 news app in every EU country amid attempts by the EU to censor the platform.

However, his most straightforward critique of the EU has been his initial post on December 9 on EU’s reported involvement in human rights violation by prioritizing immigration. The Tesla CEO’s anti-immigration stance was made clear for the umpteenth time in the following post.

The positionality of X in the context of free speech and censorship has been a bone of contention between the company CEO Elon Musk and the European Union. Although the organization chooses to maintain strict regulations pertaining to internet safety and security, X’s reported violations of the same has prompted strict steps from them. However, Nikita Bier’s announcement of banning the EU Commission’s X ad account speaks volumes about the consequences of legal action on ethical grounds.
