Anthropic CEO Issues a Stern Warning About “AI Tsunami”, Claims Society Isn’t Realising ‘What’s About to Happen’

Advanced AI models are causing significant disruption in the market. The family of LLMs has sparked fears of job losses, and recent comments by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei appear to reinforce those concerns. He has advised against entertaining what he describes as delusional thinking that AI will not make a dent in the commercial ecosystem. His message is blunt: a tsunami is coming — prepare for impact.

In an interview with prominent Indian entrepreneur and podcaster Nikhil Kamath, Amodei sounded the alarm about artificial intelligence mimicking human intelligence faster than many had anticipated. In that context, he also explained which kinds of jobs could be taken over by AI and what humanity may need to switch to for longer, gainful employment.

Don’t be deceived by AI impact skeptics, implies Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei

Amodei told Kamath that he had no doubts about AI causing disruption in the marketplace. “You know, it is surprising to me that we are … so close to these models reaching the level of human intelligence, and yet there doesn’t seem to be a wider recognition in society of what’s about to happen. It’s as if this tsunami is coming at us. It’s so close, we can see it on the horizon, and yet people are coming up with explanations like, ‘Oh, it’s not actually a tsunami, it’s just a trick of the light,’” he said.

The Anthropic CEO warned that there is no significant public awareness about how AI could eat up people’s jobs. When Kamath asked him which jobs are in danger of being replaced first, he replied, “Stuff like code and software engineering is becoming more and more AI-focused..”

The CEO highlighted that at present, code is being increasingly executed by AI models, but the broader “end-to-end” tasks of software engineering will take more time to be fully implemented by AI systems. Nevertheless, he suggested that it is going to happen.

Meanwhile, he did give an idea about the kind of jobs that may not be immediately affected by the AI revolution. “I would think about tasks that are human-centered, tasks that involve relating to people,” he said.

Amodei further stated that jobs pertaining to building AI systems, and supply chain businesses — especially in the semiconductor space, which involve elements of traditional engineering — will likely survive the AI ‘tsunami’ for the time being. However, software is one domain where he believes there is going to be massive disruption.

Anthropic’s flagship AI model, Claude, is being used by many enterprises for its ability to automate tasks and workflows. It is a key rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, contributing to disruption across IT services, technology roles, and data-driven businesses.

Entire business shaken by Anthropic’s new blog post

A recent blog post by Anthropic drew attention after stating that Claude can help streamline COBOL code, a decades-old programming language still widely used in enterprise systems. A significant portion of banking, airline, and government systems continues to run on COBOL.

Following broader investor concerns around AI’s growing ability to modernize legacy systems, IBM’s stock declined sharply at one point, falling around 13% in a single trading session and wiping billions off its market value.

This development raises questions about the exclusivity of legacy coding expertise. Systems that previously required significant manpower for workflow mapping and modernization could increasingly be automated by advanced AI models. IBM has historically remained a major player in helping large enterprises run and modernize COBOL systems.

There is a new term being informally used — “Anthropic Effect” or “Claude Crash” — referring to broader market anxiety that white-collar jobs may be replaced faster than expected. In the current climate of strong forecasts from AI leaders, markets appear to be reacting sharply. For now, all anyone can do is brace for impact.
