Elon Musk’s X Breaks Usage Record in Consecutive Days Courtesy of Growing Tensions Between USA and Iran

Instability heightens in the Middle East as the USA, along with Israel, engages in back-and-forth airstrikes with Iran. The first move was made by the USA as the country launched a coordinated aerial assault on Iran’s military bases and leadership.

The retaliation was just as fierce, with Iran targeting American and Israeli air bases across the Gulf region. As per the latest reports, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, along with many other top security officials of the Islamic regime, was killed. On the other hand, the U.S. military has confirmed three American service members killed during the hostilities, while five U.S. troops were seriously wounded.

Amid the fighting still unfolding in the Gulf region, billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk is seeing a surge in engagement on his platform, though not by design. As the military escalation gains massive traction on social media, Musk-owned X has crossed another milestone — albeit for a morbid reason.

Has war become a spectator sport for Elon Musk’s X?

Currently, no news story is attracting more headlines than the crisis unfolding in the Gulf region, following coordinated US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The instability has led to significant loss of life and has severely impacted financial markets. More than legacy media outlets, people are increasingly getting their updates on the military crisis through social media platforms.

In that context, Musk-owned X recorded its highest usage ever, prompting the tech billionaire to tweet, “Another all-time record in 𝕏 usage.” His comment was in response to the platform’s product manager Nikita Bier, who noted that the platform recorded its highest viewership in history. “The biggest day on 𝕏 in history is today,” he wrote on X.

Last year, the platform reached 417 billion global user-seconds in a single day — the highest usage ever recorded on X — on July 15. The latest milestone has surpassed that number, although the exact user-seconds figure for the 2026 record has not been officially published or disclosed by Musk.

It is hardly surprising that so many people took to X to discuss and debate the war, significantly boosting activity on the platform. As Musk’s company is witnessing record viewership during the military escalation, the US and Israel have eliminated a lot of high-value targets in Iran.

Ayatollah Khamenei, along with many other leaders of Iran’s hierarchy, reported dead

The coordinated aerial attacks conducted by the US and Israel killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as per international reports. Reportedly, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB stated that Khamenei was in his compound in Tehran, which was destroyed in the airstrike.

Along with Khamenei, several of his family members were killed in the air raid. Moreover, General Mohammad Pakpour, head of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, was also eliminated.

As per the Israeli Defense Forces, a total of seven senior Iranian defense officials were neutralised in the airstrikes. As the conflict in the Middle East rages on amid widespread condemnation from international bodies and civil societies, it remains to be seen whether there is an end in sight for the tensions.
