Matthew McConaughey Warns AI Is Replacing Creatives and Nobody Can Stop It

Sam Altman’s prognosis about the early forms of superintelligence could scare the daylights out of everybody, including the top CEOs and executives of companies making smart business decisions. Thus, if the brilliant minds in the tech leadership world are easily replaceable, then where does it leave the rest of us?

The advent of AI has also rocked the creative world. The Hollywood industry will not be hesitant to use AI if it means it can cut down the cost of production. With AI voiceovers and deep fakes proliferating, many artists are contemplating their professional futures.

In the recent CNN & Variety Town Hall Event, which included a candid discussion about films between Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey, the latter stated that, rather than indulging in moral grandstanding against AI, it is pertinent for the artist in the industry to prepare well for the inevitable impact.

Matthew McConaughey urged artists to “trademark”

Fielding a question from the audience about how Hollywood will change with the advent of new technology—and what steps should be taken to prevent artists from being replaced by AI—McConaughey said the first step is acknowledgement.

“It’s coming. It’s already here. Don’t deny it,” he said. He implied there is no use for artists to sit on their laurels thinking their jobs are safe, and instead urged them to find ways to benefit from the new technology.

“It’s not going to be enough to sit on the sidelines and make the moral plea that this is wrong,” McConaughey said. “There’s too much money to be made.”

His advice to creatives was to trademark their talents.

“Own yourself. Voice, likeness, etc. Trademark it—whatever you’ve got to do. So when it comes, no one can steal you. Own yourself so they have to come to you,” he said.

He added that AI could eventually have its own awards categories.

“Does it become another category? Will we, in five years, have ‘the best AI film?’ ‘The best AI actor?’ … It’s gonna get so good we’re not going to know the difference,” he said.

Pair McConaughey’s warnings with Altman’s superintelligence outlook, and the result could be massive instability across both the tech and creative industries—potentially making many jobs redundant until innovative methods emerge to adapt to AI disruption, forcing professionals to rethink skills, ownership, and survival in an increasingly automated future.

Nevertheless, McConaughey urges artists to remain calm amidst the AI storm and respond in a measured way to the dynamic industry trends rather than burying their heads in the sand.
